The Evolution of Heroes and Villains Characters Design

The Evolution of Characters
The original Disney villains were always misfits and anti-social rebels. Which is completely opposite from the concept of a villain in the present day. Villains nowadays are wolves in sheep’s clothing, and the heroes are the misunderstood characters. However, in Zootopia (spoiler alerts), the sheep doesn’t need to wear wolves clothing in order to be evil, so never trust those fluffy baah baahhh.

Okay, back to the case study: Yes, villains came in all types of forms; however, after researching, observing, and comparing the character appearances, it is shown that Disney is trying to undo the stereotype that was created from the previous creator’s biased point of view.

Wolves in sheep’s clothing

Ghibli Studio animation, on the other hand, doesn’t really have a villain. Most of the time, their villains are an outburst of emotion from the protagonist or a conflict between themselves and their anxiety. Somehow, this way of approaching storytelling doesn’t rely on putting characters into labeled boxes, and it does help normalize humans dealing with their own emotions. It does take time to overcome the fear of oneself or the unknown, and the best way to educate people on mental health is by sharing the journey of the characters that are struggling to navigate the world between good and evil.
